A straightforward control or pressure issue may take less time to identify than an intermittent fault. Boiler age and parts availability can also change the options an engineer is able to offer.

- Whether the visit is outside the engineer’s usual hours
What to ask before the visit
Ask how diagnosis is charged, whether the price includes VAT, and how extra work will be authorised. A useful description, fault code and boiler model can help the engineer prepare, although it cannot replace an inspection.
Repair or replace?
Age alone does not decide the answer. Consider reliability, repair history, parts support, efficiency and whether the system still suits the property. Ask for the reasoning behind both options before committing.
