Boiler planning

How long does a boiler usually last?

Why condition, maintenance, system design and parts support matter more than a single headline boiler lifespan.

Many boilers provide useful service for well over a decade, but there is no fixed expiry date. Installation quality, system water, usage, servicing and repair history all influence what happens next.

Age is only one signal

An older boiler that is dependable and supported with parts may remain practical. A newer boiler with repeated faults or a poorly matched system can still justify closer investigation.

Signs worth reviewing

Look at the pattern rather than one isolated repair. Increasing breakdowns, worsening noise, hard-to-source parts or a system that no longer meets demand are reasons to compare options.

  • Frequency and cost of recent repairs
  • Availability of parts and manufacturer support
  • Heating comfort and hot-water performance
  • Changes planned for the property
  • The engineer’s findings after inspection

Plan before an emergency

If replacement is becoming likely, a planned survey gives more time to compare specifications and quotations than an urgent failure during cold weather.

Important: This guide provides general information. Do not remove a boiler casing or attempt gas work. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer for gas work.
