Fault guidance

Signs your boiler needs professional attention

Changes in noise, pressure, performance and reliability that are worth describing to an appropriately qualified engineer.

A new noise or occasional fault does not tell you the diagnosis, but a clear record of changes can help an engineer investigate efficiently.

Changes to record

Note when the symptom appears and whether heating, hot water or both are affected. Avoid trying to identify internal components yourself.

  • Pressure that repeatedly drops
  • Leaks, damp patches or corrosion near the appliance
  • Banging, whistling or vibrating that is new
  • Frequent lockouts or fault codes
  • Hot water that changes temperature unexpectedly
  • Radiators that stay cold despite normal controls

Safety takes priority

A gas smell, carbon monoxide alarm, soot staining or physical symptoms that could indicate carbon monoxide require an emergency response, not an online diagnosis. Leave and call 0800 111 999 from outside.

Make the enquiry useful

Include the boiler make, model, approximate age, display code and a concise timeline. This helps an independent engineer decide whether the enquiry is within their area and job type.

Important: This guide provides general information. Do not remove a boiler casing or attempt gas work. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer for gas work.
